Every French Bulldog mix here has one French Bulldog parent, capped by its standard at not exceeding 28 pounds and built on heavy bone with a short, smooth coat. The second parent — Boston Terrier, Chihuahua or Shih Tzu — sets the bottom of the size bracket. No standard exists for any of these crosses.
What the French Bulldog parent brings
Frenchton, French Bullchi and French Bull Tzu are marketplace names. No registry recognises any of them and none has a written standard. Every figure below is read off the two parent standards, and we say which parent it came from.
The French Bulldog standard describes “an active, intelligent, muscular dog of heavy bone, smooth coat, compactly built”, not to exceed 28 pounds, with a muzzle “broad, deep and well laid back”, and a dog “well behaved, adaptable… not unduly boisterous”. This is the heaviest-boned group of crosses on the site, so a modest adult weight does not mean a delicate dog. The muzzle clause is why the heat section below matters more here than on any other page we publish.
The three crosses we see
Frenchton (French Bulldog × Boston Terrier)
The Boston Terrier standard sets weight classes — under 15 pounds, 15 and under 20, and 20 and not to exceed 25 — and describes “a lively, highly intelligent, smooth coated, short-headed, compactly built, short-tailed, well balanced dog”. The bracket here is the narrowest on the page, running to a 25 to 28 pound ceiling depending on which parent a puppy favours, with a short coat on both sides. Note “short-headed”: VCA names both parents among brachycephalic breeds. Two short-muzzled parents do not reliably lengthen a muzzle, whatever a listing implies.
French Bullchi (French Bulldog × Chihuahua)
The Chihuahua standard caps weight at not exceeding 6 pounds, in a smooth or a long coat variety, and describes an alert dog with terrier-like self-importance. Six pounds on one side and up to 28 on the other gives this the widest bracket on the page, roughly 6 to 28 pounds. Coat depends on the Chihuahua variety: a smooth parent keeps it a wipe-down, a long coat adds brushing. A puppy may still take its face from the French Bulldog side, so read the heat section below whichever cross you are considering. See our toy breeds page for the small end.
French Bull Tzu (French Bulldog × Shih Tzu)
The Shih Tzu standard gives 9 to 16 pounds and 9 to 10½ inches, so the bracket is roughly 9 to 28 pounds. Coat work is a real question only here: the Shih Tzu coat is “luxurious, double-coated, dense, long, and flowing”, and a puppy can take a coat closer to that parent than to the smooth French Bulldog. The Shih Tzu standard also calls for a muzzle “square, short”, and VCA names the breed among brachycephalic ones — again, short muzzles on both sides. More on that parent at Shih Tzu mixes.
Georgia heat and the honest tradeoffs
VCA names French Bulldogs, Pekingese, Shih Tzus and Boston Terriers among brachycephalic breeds, where narrowed nostrils and an elongated soft palate can restrict airflow, and says the signs “are often worse in hot or humid weather”. Dogs cool themselves mainly by panting, so a dog whose airway is restricted faces greater heat stroke risk, sometimes at only moderately elevated temperature and humidity. A Lawrenceville summer supplies both, for months.
In practice: air conditioning as the default rather than a luxury, shade and water outdoors, walks at either end of the day instead of the middle, and a harness rather than a collar so nothing presses on the throat. It also means we will not predict how any individual puppy breathes. Crossing does not reliably lengthen a muzzle, and nobody can tell from a photograph. Only a veterinarian examining the dog can assess its airway. Ask your vet, and ask early.
Adult size is a bracket, not a specification, and the French Bullchi bracket is wide enough to plan for either end. Veterinary guidance puts small breeds at full adult size by about twelve months, so you will know soon enough. We will not promise a number in advance. All four parent standards describe confident, people-oriented dogs, and individual dogs vary. For what is in the showroom now, see available puppies by breed.
Common questions
How big does a French Bulldog mix get?
It depends on the second parent. A Frenchton runs to a 25 to 28 pound ceiling, a French Bull Tzu brackets roughly 9 to 28 pounds, and a French Bullchi roughly 6 to 28. Those are brackets read off parent standards, not predictions about one puppy.
Does a Frenchton breathe better than a French Bulldog?
Not reliably. VCA lists both the French Bulldog and the Boston Terrier as brachycephalic breeds, so both parents are short-muzzled and crossing them does not lengthen the muzzle. Only a veterinarian examining a dog can assess its airway.
Can these dogs live in the Georgia heat?
Many do, with management: air conditioning, shade and water, and walks early or late rather than at midday. VCA notes affected dogs face greater heat stroke risk, sometimes at only moderately elevated temperature and humidity. Ask your veterinarian about your own dog before summer.
Do these crosses need a groomer?
The Frenchton and French Bullchi are mostly a weekly brush, since smooth coats sit on both sides. A French Bull Tzu is the exception: the Shih Tzu side brings a long double coat.
