Cockapoos and Cockerchons are Cocker Spaniel crosses, and no registry recognises either name or publishes a standard for one. Stranger still, not one of the three parent standards involved gives a weight at all — only heights. That is the real reason published weight ranges for these crosses disagree so widely.
Three standards, and not one pound figure between them
The American Cocker Spaniel standard sets an ideal height of 15 inches for a male and 14 for a female, half an inch either way, and then stops. It gives no weight. The Poodle standard gives no weight for any variety either: Toy is “10 inches or under”, Miniature is “15 inches or under, with a minimum height in excess of 10 inches”, and Standard over 15 inches. The Bichon Frise standard prefers 9½ to 11½ inches, never over 12 nor under 9, with no weight anywhere in it.
So when you read that a Cockapoo “weighs 12 to 24 pounds”, that number did not come out of a breed document. It came from somebody’s tally of dogs they had seen. We publish a bracket of our own on the Cockapoo size chart, and we show the arithmetic behind it rather than dressing it up as a breed rule. The one adult weight we can source on this page is veterinary rather than from a standard: VCA puts adult Bichons at 10 to 16 pounds.
Both names are marketplace names. No registry recognises either and neither has a written standard, so a cross gives a bracket between two parent breeds, never a specification.
The two crosses we see most
Cockapoo (Cocker Spaniel and Poodle)
Ask which Poodle variety is behind the litter first, because the answer moves the whole bracket. A Toy Poodle is 10 inches or under; a Miniature is over 10 and up to 15. Put either beside a Cocker at 14 or 15 inches and you have two different adult dogs. The Poodle side brings a coat the standard calls “curly: of naturally harsh texture, dense throughout”, and a dog it describes as carrying himself proudly, very active and intelligent. Cocker coats are longer and flatter. Most Cockapoos land between the two, wavy enough to mat, which means a groomer on a regular cycle for life. Our Poodle size chart lays out the three varieties, and Cavapoo vs Cockapoo sets it against the cross buyers most often compare.
Cockerchon (Cocker Spaniel and Bichon Frise)
Both parents here are measured in inches only, which makes the Cockerchon our clearest case of a cross with no sourced weight behind it. Height still gives a frame. The Bichon sits at 9½ to 11½ inches preferred and the Cocker at 14 or 15, so the cross falls between them. The Bichon side brings a soft undercoat under a coarser curling outer coat that springs back when patted, scissored to the dog’s natural outline rather than clipped short. Expect Bichon grooming, with more length. See it beside our other curly-coated crosses on our Poodle mixes page.
| Parent breed | What its standard gives | Weight in that standard |
|---|---|---|
| American Cocker Spaniel | Ideal 15 in male, 14 in female, half an inch either way | None |
| Poodle, Toy and Miniature | Toy 10 in or under; Miniature over 10 in, up to 15 in | None |
| Bichon Frise | 9½ to 11½ in preferred, never over 12 nor under 9 | None; VCA puts adults at 10 to 16 lb |
The honest caveats
We will not tell you what an individual puppy will weigh as an adult, because nobody can. Veterinary guidance from Dr. Jerry Klein is that small breeds finish growing around six to eight months and reach full adult size by about twelve months, so you will know your own dog’s answer before its first birthday and not before. If a seller gives a number to the pound, ask which document it came from.
Judge a grown dog’s condition the way VCA’s Body Condition Score system does: feel for the ribs and look for a waist rather than trusting the scale. A coated cross can hide a few extra pounds.
On temperament, the Poodle standard describes an active, intelligent dog. That is a breed described on paper, not a promise about the puppy in front of you. Individual dogs vary. Meet a few in Lawrenceville before you decide, and check available puppies by breed for what is actually here.
Common questions
How big will a Cockapoo get?
Somewhere between its parents, and the answer depends on the Poodle variety used. A Toy parent is 10 inches or under, a Miniature over 10 and up to 15, against a Cocker at 14 or 15 inches. Neither standard gives a weight, so any pound figure is an observation, not a breed rule.
Why do published Cockapoo weights disagree so much?
Because there is no source document to disagree with. The Cocker, Poodle and Bichon standards all give height only. With no written weight for any parent breed, every published range is somebody’s estimate, and estimates drift.
Do Cocker Spaniel crosses need professional grooming?
Almost always. A Cocker coat is long and flat, a Poodle coat curly and dense, a Bichon coat scissored to the outline. Whatever your dog inherits needs brushing at home and a groomer on a cycle, for life.
Is the Cockerchon a recognised breed?
No. Cockerchon is a marketplace name, as Cockapoo is. No registry recognises either and neither has a written standard, which is why we describe both through their parent standards.
