Every Chihuahua mix here has one Chihuahua parent, and the breed standard caps that parent at six pounds. The second parent — Dachshund, French Bulldog, Pekingese or Pomeranian — sets almost everything else, including whether the adult dog is toy-sized or closer to thirty pounds. No standard exists for any of these crosses.
No registry publishes data on these crosses
Chiweenie, French Bullchi, Pekachi and Pom-Chi are marketplace names. No registry recognises them and none publishes size, coat or temperament data for them. Every figure on this page is read straight off the two parent breed standards, and we say which parent it came from.
The Chihuahua parent is the constant. Its standard caps weight at six pounds and describes “a graceful, alert, swift-moving compact little dog with saucy expression”, an apple-dome skull, a smooth or a long coat, and a temperament that is “alert, projecting the ‘terrier-like’ attitudes of self importance, confidence, self-reliance”. The four crosses pair that dog with four very different second parents.
What each second parent changes
Chiweenie (Chihuahua × Dachshund)
The Dachshund standard describes a dog “low to ground, long in body and short of leg”, “clever, lively and courageous to the point of rashness”. It gives 16 to 32 pounds for the standard size and “11 pounds and under” for miniatures. Ask us which variety the Dachshund parent is, because that one fact swings the whole adult range. Plan for the long build either way: VCA notes that breeds with long backs and short bowed legs show faster disc deterioration, with obesity and repeated jarring adding to the risk.
French Bullchi (Chihuahua × French Bulldog)
The French Bulldog standard asks for “an active, intelligent, muscular dog of heavy bone, smooth coat, compactly built”, not to exceed 28 pounds, with a muzzle “broad, deep and well laid back” and a dog that is “well behaved, adaptable… not unduly boisterous”. It brings bone and body mass, an easy-care short coat and a short muzzle. Six pounds on one side and up to twenty-eight on the other gives this cross the widest size range on the page.
Pekachi (Chihuahua × Pekingese)
The Pekingese standard allows any weight “within the limit of 14 pounds” and describes “a heavy front and lighter hindquarters”, a broad flat skull, and a “long, coarse-textured, straight, stand-off” coat over a “thick, soft undercoat”, with a temperament of “regal dignity, intelligence and self-importance”. That is the most coat of the four, plus a flat face and a low, long frame that VCA groups with the Dachshund when it discusses disc risk.
Pom-Chi (Chihuahua × Pomeranian)
The Pomeranian standard gives “3 to 7 pounds” and a “double coat” of “a short dense undercoat with a profuse harsh-textured longer outer coat”, on “an extrovert, exhibiting great intelligence and a vivacious spirit”. Both parents are toy-sized, so this is the narrowest size range here. Expect real brushing and real shedding, and expect two extroverted parents to add up to a busy, talkative dog. See our toy breeds page for the rest of that group.
Georgia heat and short muzzles
Two of these second parents matter more here than they would further north. VCA lists French Bulldogs and Pekingese among brachycephalic breeds, where narrowed nostrils and an elongated soft palate can restrict airflow, and says the signs “are often worse in hot or humid weather”. Dogs cool themselves mainly by panting, so a dog whose airway is restricted faces a greater risk of heat stroke, sometimes at only moderately elevated temperature and humidity. A Lawrenceville August supplies both.
We will not predict how any individual puppy breathes. A crossbred puppy can take its face from either parent, and only a veterinarian examining the dog can assess its airway. Ask your vet, and ask early.
The honest tradeoffs
Adult size is a bracket, not a specification, and the Chiweenie and French Bullchi brackets are wide. Coat work varies enormously across these four: a French Bullchi is a wipe-down, a Pekachi is a commitment. Two of the crosses bring a long back that wants weight control and fewer jumps on and off furniture. And the Chihuahua standard’s self-importance is not a joke — these dogs have opinions, and small dogs with opinions still need training. Common questions
How big does a Chiweenie get?
It depends entirely on the Dachshund parent. The standard Dachshund is 16 to 32 pounds and the miniature is 11 pounds and under, against a Chihuahua capped at six, so ask which our parent dog is before you plan around a size.
Will a French Bullchi have breathing problems?
We cannot tell you. VCA names the French Bulldog as a brachycephalic breed, but a crossbred puppy may take its face from either parent, and only a veterinarian examining the dog can assess its airway.
Which Chihuahua mix handles Georgia summers best?
The two without a short-muzzled parent, the Chiweenie and the Pom-Chi, are the safer bet on paper. Any dog here still needs shade, water and air conditioning in July, and heat questions belong with your veterinarian.
Do any registries recognise these crosses?
No. There is no breed standard for a Chiweenie, French Bullchi, Pekachi or Pom-Chi, and no registry publishes data on them. Everything on this page comes from the parent breeds’ standards.
