Physical Characteristics

Size:

Typically around 7 to 8 inches (18 to 20 cm) tall at the shoulder. Weight: Usually between 4 to 7 pounds (1.8 to 3.2 kg), with some variation depending on the individual dog.

Coat:

Yorkshire Terriers have hair, not fur, so they shed very little.

Color:

Typically, they have a combination of steel-blue and tan. The blue is often darker along the back, while the tan color is found on the face, chest, and legs.

Eyes:

Yorkies have dark, round, expressive eyes that give them a cute, alert look.

Ears:

Their ears are small, V-shaped, and stand erect. They are often covered with a bit of their silky hair.

Tail:

Their tail is usually medium in length, straight, and often carried up or slightly curved. In some places, tails are docked, but this is becoming less common.

Yorkies have a compact and slightly square body, which gives them a sturdy and balanced appearance despite their small size.

Temperament & Grooming Needs

Will a Yorkie be a good addition to my home? Are they good with kids? What are their temperaments like? Yorkies have huge personalities in a tiny body! They are inquisitive, friendly, and energetic. Yorkshire Terriers love to please their owners. Intelligent and easy to train, Yorkies are wonderful dogs for senior citizens or those with medical limitations. Cuddly, loving, and attentive to their family, Yorkies are snuggly pups. The first therapy dog was a Yorkie during WWII, comforting injured soldiers in a military hospital!

Yorkies have a coat that is very similar to human hair. Comb it daily just like your own hair to keep it tangle-free. The Yorkie’s coat can be trimmed short, or allowed to grow into a beautiful, floor length coat. Yorkies should be bathed weekly or as needed. The hair on top of a Yorkie’s head could be pulled into a ponytail with a bow for a designer diva look!

Plan on brushing the coat a few times a week and a professional groom every six to eight weeks to keep it free of mats.
