Sugar Sweet Georgia Puppies is known as the worlds “Yorkie Puppy Capital” for a very good reason; we always have wonderful toy Yorkie puppies. Sugar Sweet Georgia Puppies Yorkie puppies are intelligent, sassy, and full of attitude wrapped up in a tiny body. Although they are super affectionate and loyal, training them takes consistency and patience. The stores top Vet Dr. Lori is particularly fond of Yorkies and owns three beautiful Yorkies. Here’s a few things our stores training team recommends when training Yorkie puppies:
1. Potty Training
- Yorkies can be notoriously stubborn with housebreaking.
- Crate training + scheduled potty breaks = best combo.
- Consider indoor potty pads as backup, but always reinforce outdoor habits.
- Take them out: after waking, eating, drinking, and every 1–2 hours.
2. Crate Training
- Yorkies often love cozy spaces—just make sure the crate is small and comfy.
- Gradually increase crate time, starting with 5–10 mins.
3. Basic Commands
Start with: Sit, Stay, Come, Leave it, Quiet
- Use tiny high-value treats and lots of praise.
- Keep sessions short and upbeat—Yorkies get bored quickly!
4. Barking Control
- Yorkies are natural alert barkers—train a “quiet” cue early.
- Don’t yell (they’ll think you’re barking too). Instead, reward calm behavior.
- Desensitize them to doorbells, people walking by, etc.
5. Socialization
- Yorkies can become clingy or reactive if not socialized.
- Expose them to different sounds, people, and gentle dogs.
- Carry them at first if you’re in a big crowd, then let them explore.
6. Leash & Harness Training
- Use a soft harness to protect their trachea.
- Practice walking indoors first—Yorkies can be dramatic when they don’t want to walk.
7. Mental Enrichment
- Yorkies are super smart—add puzzles, treat-dispensing toys, and new trick training often.
8. Prevent Spoiled Behavior
- Don’t let them become “tiny tyrants.” Set clear rules.
- Make them work for rewards (treats, toys, attention).
