Most Cavapoos finish between 8 and 20 pounds, and where your dog lands inside that spread depends mainly on whether the Poodle parent was a Toy or a Miniature. Toy-line Cavapoos usually mature around 8 to 13 pounds; Miniature-line Cavapoos usually mature around 14 to 20 pounds.
If you have been comparing Cavapoos to Maltipoos, here is the short version: Cavapoos run larger, at every point on the chart, and the reason is entirely on the non-Poodle side.
Why Cavapoos run larger than Maltipoos
Same Poodle math, different partner.
The breed standard for the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel calls for 13 to 18 pounds and 12 to 13 inches at the shoulder. The breed standard for the Maltese calls for under 7 pounds. So the Cavalier parent weighs roughly two to three times what a Maltese parent weighs.
Cross each with the same Toy Poodle and the difference shows up immediately. A Toy-line Maltipoo commonly finishes around 5 to 10 pounds; a Toy-line Cavapoo commonly finishes around 8 to 13 pounds. Move to a Miniature Poodle and the gap holds: roughly 10 to 20 pounds for the Maltipoo against roughly 14 to 20 pounds for the Cavapoo, with the Cavapoo sitting in the upper part of that band far more often.
Put plainly: if you want a lap dog under 10 pounds, a Cavapoo is a less reliable bet than a Maltipoo, and we would rather tell you that up front than after you have picked a puppy.
Expected adult weight and height
Toy Poodle line
- Weight: about 8 to 13 pounds
- Height: about 9 to 12 inches
Miniature Poodle line
- Weight: about 14 to 20 pounds
- Height: about 12 to 16 inches
There is no official Cavapoo standard. No major kennel club recognizes the cross as a breed, so no governing body has ever defined what size a Cavapoo should be. These ranges are observation, not rule, and individual dogs fall outside them.
Why there is no weight-by-age chart here
Nothing credible publishes age-by-age weights for a crossbreed. No registry recognises this cross, no breed club tracks it, and the two parent standards describe adult dogs rather than puppies. Any chart claiming to know what one weighs at fourteen weeks was invented by somebody. What we can give you is the adult bracket above, drawn from the parent standards, and the growth timeline below.
What affects adult size
The Poodle variety. The biggest lever, same as with any Poodle cross.
The Cavalier parent’s actual weight. A Cavalier at the bottom of the standard (13 pounds) and one at the top (18 pounds) are meaningfully different starting points. Ask for the number, not just the breed.
Generation — F1 versus F1b. This one matters for Cavapoos in a way worth explaining properly.
- F1 is a first cross: one Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, one Poodle. Half and half. Coats in an F1 litter vary a lot — some straighter and more Cavalier-like, some wavier.
- F1b is a Cavapoo bred back to one of the parent breeds, almost always the Poodle. That makes the puppy roughly three-quarters Poodle. Because the added Poodle is usually a Toy or Miniature, F1b puppies often trend somewhat smaller than F1 puppies from comparable lines, and their coats tend to run curlier and more Poodle-like.
The honest caveat: a generation label shifts the odds, it does not determine the result. Coat and shedding are influenced by multiple genes, and individual puppies in any generation surprise people. An F1b is not a guarantee of a small dog or a particular coat, and we will not present it as one. We also do not call any dog hypoallergenic — no dog is, and how a person reacts to an individual dog is not something a label predicts.
Body condition. A thick wavy coat hides a lot. Use your hands: ribs easy to feel under a thin covering, a visible waist from above, a tuck-up from the side. Extra weight on a Cavapoo is extra weight, not extra dog.
When they stop growing
Toy-line Cavapoos are usually at or near adult size by 9 to 12 months. Miniature-line Cavapoos, being bigger, commonly fill out through 12 months and sometimes a little beyond.
Height tends to finish before weight. Once your dog has stopped getting taller, further gains are filling out — and eventually just gaining. Your vet is the one to tell you where that line falls for your particular dog.
Signs of healthy growth, and when to ask a veterinarian
Steady weekly gains, good energy, reliable appetite, and a body condition you can read by feel. Weigh on the same scale at the same time of day.
Call your veterinarian for weight loss, a young puppy that stalls out with no gains, sudden lethargy or weakness, refusal to eat, trembling or wobbliness. Small-breed puppies carry limited energy reserves, and veterinary guidance treats low blood sugar as a genuine risk in the youngest and smallest of them — frequent meals and keeping the puppy warm are the standard preventive measures, and anything beyond that is a vet visit rather than a wait.
Every puppy at our showroom gets a complete health check from our on-staff veterinarian and is up to date on shots. Once a puppy is home, growth questions belong with your own vet.
About the word “teacup”
We do not use teacup as a size, for Cavapoos or anything else. It is not a recognized size class — not by any breed club, not in veterinary practice. It is a marketing label that different sellers apply to very different dogs.
For a Cavapoo it is particularly misleading, because the Cavalier side simply does not support a very small dog. When someone advertises a teacup Cavapoo, look at the parents’ weights before you look at anything else.
Coat and grooming
Cavapoo coats range from wavy to curly, and either way they need regular brushing and trimming — the ear feathering in particular, which the Cavalier side contributes. Grooming services are available here if you would rather not handle it at home.
Frequently asked questions
Will a Cavapoo stay smaller than a Maltipoo?
Usually the opposite. The Cavalier parent weighs 13 to 18 pounds against the Maltese parent’s under 7, so Cavapoos run larger at every stage. If a very small adult dog is the priority, say so when you visit and we will point you accordingly.
Does F1b mean my Cavapoo will be smaller?
It often trends that way, since the back-cross is usually to a Toy or Miniature Poodle. But it is a tendency, not a guarantee. The parents’ actual weights tell you more than the generation label does.
Can a Cavapoo stay under 10 pounds?
Some Toy-line Cavapoos do finish in the 8-to-10-pound range. It is possible, not predictable, and anyone promising it is overstating what they know.
Is there an official Cavapoo size standard?
No. The cross is not recognized as a breed by any major kennel club, so no official standard exists. Every range on this page comes from observed adult weights.
When is a Cavapoo fully grown?
Most Toy-line dogs by 9 to 12 months, most Miniature-line dogs by around 12 months or slightly later. Steady gains well past that are usually weight rather than growth — worth raising at your next vet appointment.
