Short-coated does not mean shed-free. A smooth Chihuahua, Dachshund, French Bulldog, Boston Terrier or Miniature Pinscher needs a weekly brush rather than a standing groomer appointment. What several of them trade for that saved grooming is heat management, back care, or both.
Less grooming, not no grooming
Every other collection on this site is a groomer’s dog for life. These are not. Nobody scissors a Boston Terrier to an outline or cords a Miniature Pinscher. That is a real difference in cost and time. It is not an absence of work.
- A weekly brush, because short coats still shed onto dark clothes.
- Nails, ears and teeth on the same schedule as any other breed.
- A bath when the red Georgia clay says so, not on a calendar.
We make no allergy claim for any dog here, short coat or long. Frenchton, French Bullchi and Chiweenie are marketplace names: no registry recognises them, none has a written standard, and each gives a bracket between two parent documents rather than a specification. If low shedding rather than short coat is what you are after, that is a different list, on our low-shedding breeds page.
The breeds
Chihuahua, smooth coat
The standard recognises a smooth and a long coat variety, and the smooth one belongs here. Weight is not to exceed 6 pounds. The standard describes an alert dog with a terrier-like self-importance, and dogs vary from that ideal.
Dachshund
The standard describes the frame rather than the coat: “low to ground, long in body and short of leg”, and a dog “clever, lively and courageous to the point of rashness”. Weight is 16 to 32 pounds, with miniatures “11 pounds and under”. Ask which coat a puppy carries and look at it yourself.
French Bulldog
The standard asks for an “active, intelligent, muscular dog of heavy bone, smooth coat, compactly built”, not to exceed 28 pounds, with a muzzle “broad, deep and well laid back”, and a temperament “well behaved, adaptable… not unduly boisterous”. The coat is the easy part; the muzzle needs planning.
Boston Terrier
The standard puts it plainly: “a lively, highly intelligent, smooth coated, short-headed, compactly built, short-tailed, well balanced dog”. Weight comes in classes: under 15 pounds, 15 and under 20, and 20 and not to exceed 25. Ask which class a breeder works in.
Miniature Pinscher
The clause we can quote is height, 10 to 12½ inches, with no weight figure to give you. The standard describes fearless animation and complete self-possession. It is the only breed on this page with neither a short muzzle nor a long back.
Frenchton (French Bulldog crossed with Boston Terrier)
Both parents are smooth-coated, so the coat is the predictable part. The muzzle is not. VCA names both the French Bulldog and the Boston Terrier among brachycephalic breeds, which means crossing them does not reliably lengthen anything. More on our French Bulldog mixes page.
French Bullchi (French Bulldog crossed with Chihuahua)
One parent is capped at 28 pounds, the other at 6, so the bracket is wide. Coat depends on which Chihuahua variety is behind the litter, and the French Bulldog side may or may not pass on the short muzzle.
Chiweenie (Chihuahua crossed with Dachshund)
A puppy here may inherit the Dachshund’s long body on short legs, or may not, and nobody can tell from a photograph. Read the back-care section below before you choose one.

What the short coat costs you elsewhere
Heat first. VCA names French Bulldogs and Boston Terriers among brachycephalic breeds, where narrowed nostrils and an elongated soft palate can restrict airflow, and says the signs “are often worse in hot or humid weather”. Dogs cool themselves mainly by panting, and affected dogs face greater heat stroke risk, sometimes at only moderately elevated temperature and humidity. In Lawrenceville that is most of the summer, so plan on air conditioning, shade, water and walks at either end of the day. We will not predict how any puppy breathes; only a veterinarian examining a dog can assess its airway.
Backs next. VCA notes that breeds with long backs and short bowed legs show faster disc deterioration, with obesity and repeated jarring adding to the risk, and it names the Dachshund. That means weight control, fewer jumps off the sofa, steps or a ramp, and supporting the back when you lift. Judge weight as VCA suggests: feel the ribs, look for a waist.
One more. VCA lists Chihuahuas among breeds prone to tracheal collapse, where the honking cough worsens with excitement, heat, humidity or collar pressure, so use a harness. For the puppies in the showroom now, see available puppies by breed, or read our family-friendly breeds page.
Common questions
Do short-coated dogs shed?
Yes. Short hair still comes out, and it shows on furniture. A weekly brush handles most of it. Short coat and low shedding are different things, and we treat neither as an allergy claim.
Will any of these need a professional groomer?
Not for clipping or scissoring, which is the saving. Nails, ears and teeth still need doing, and plenty of owners pay a groomer for those.
Does crossing a French Bulldog give a longer muzzle?
Not reliably. VCA names both the French Bulldog and the Boston Terrier among brachycephalic breeds, so a Frenchton has a short-muzzled parent on each side. Ask a veterinarian to examine any puppy you are serious about.
