From downtown Athens, our Lawrenceville showroom is about 45 miles west, almost all of it on Hwy 316, which works out to roughly an hour each way without traffic. It is a real trip, so plan an afternoon: you will meet health-checked, home-raised puppies in person and can bring yours home the same day.
Getting here from Athens
We will be honest: from Athens this is not a quick errand. The good news is that the route is simple. Our showroom at 1848 Old Norcross Rd, Lawrenceville, GA 30044 sits just off Hwy 316 at Sugarloaf Parkway, so you spend most of the drive on one road.
- From downtown, get on the Athens Perimeter (Loop 10) and follow it to Hwy 316 west toward Atlanta, signed together with US-29 on the Athens end.
- Stay on 316 through Oconee and Barrow counties and into Gwinnett.
- Exit at Sugarloaf Parkway, turn onto Cruse Road, then Old Norcross Road.
That is about 45 miles and roughly 60 to 70 minutes in light traffic. Hwy 316 mixes freeway-style stretches with sections that have traffic lights, and the Gwinnett end can back up at rush hour. If you leave Athens around 11 on a weekday, you will arrive near our noon opening and be back on the road home before the evening rush builds.
How to make one trip count
When a drive takes an hour each way, a little planning makes the day easier.
- Look before you leave. Browse available puppies by breed so you arrive with a short list. We do not post prices online, so bring your questions.
- Come ready to decide, or not. Puppies can go home the same day, which saves a second trip. If you need time to get your home ready, schedule a later pickup date and place a deposit to hold your puppy. Details are on our deposits, holds and pickup page.
- Bring a carrier or crate and a towel for the ride back down 316. An hour is a long time for a small puppy on someone’s lap.
- Breed not here? Rather than driving over to check, join the puppy waitlist.
There is no need to book; walk-ins are welcome any time we are open, Monday through Saturday 12 to 7 PM and Sunday 2 to 6 PM. Booking a visit is there if you would rather have a set time for a long drive.
Why the drive is worth it
Buying a puppy from an hour away still beats buying one from a photo. In the showroom you can see how a puppy moves, plays and settles in your arms. Every puppy is a small purebred or designer breed from trusted local Georgia breeders, raised first in our family’s home nursery around children, adults and other pets. Our on-staff veterinarian gives each puppy a complete health check, and they are up to date on shots. Our article on vet-supervised puppy buying in Georgia explains why that matters.
If you rent near campus or downtown, check your lease’s pet rules first, then look at apartment-friendly puppies or calm puppies.
Bringing a puppy home to Athens
Athens and Clarke County share one unified government, Athens-Clarke County, and its rules are simple to follow:
- No pet license. Athens-Clarke County does not have pet licensing.
- Rabies tag, always. All dogs and cats must have a current rabies vaccination and wear a current rabies tag at all times. You get the tag from the veterinarian’s office that gives the shot.
- Leash off your property. County ordinance requires animals to be under control, which means on a leash when away from home, and kept inside a fence, pen or building on your property.
Athens-Clarke County has public dog parks at three of its parks:
- Southeast Clarke Park, entrance at 325 Whit Davis Road. Its dog park, Wiggley Field, rotates three off-leash areas and includes a small-dog lawn.
- Sandy Creek Park has a large public dog park included with park admission. No food is allowed inside.
- Memorial Park has a dog park behind the restrooms, with no fee to use it.
Before any of these, wait for your veterinarian’s OK on vaccinations. Dog parks are where many dogs mix, and a young puppy should stay out of them until its vet says it is ready. For the summer months, read our tips on keeping a small dog cool in Georgia heat.
