Westies were bred to be working dogs and excel in homes without other small mammals. Westies are a no-nonsense, easy-care sort of pup. They are wonderful dogs for the first-time puppy owner, as they are so intelligent and trainable. Keep in mind that your Westie’s have a wonderful personality and can think for herself! She will be a thoroughly enjoyable pet with some positive reinforcement training. Show a Westie what’s in it for them, and they’ll be on board for all of your plans! Westies are at home in the county and city. They’ll enjoy dog parks just as much as they love long hikes, or a run out to check on the back gardens. Westies are dogs that know they’re the best, but they translate that into a bouncy confidence rather than being too full of themselves! Westies don’t take themselves too seriously, so they’re always down for a romp! Because Westies were bred to hunt, they are great problem solvers. This makes them wonderful at learning all sorts of skills! Westies are wonderful for families with children, although typically they do best with children older than 6 or 7 years of age. They are not a one-person dog, so they’ll bond wonderfully with your whole family!
Westies have a beautiful double coat of fur which is easily managed. A simple brushing when needed is all they require! The Westie’s coat is fairly easy to keep clean. Typically, a good wipe down with a damp cloth is all that’s needed. If you get into a particularly messy situation, a bath is in order! Be sure to check your Westie’s ears regularly for dirt or foul smell. A gentle wipe with a warm cloth is all you need to keep their ears clean on a normal basis.
